2025 VMTA Theory Examinations:
I take care of registering all students in the studio who are taking theory exams.
Assigned Rooms and Times will be listed here when information is received:
Name Level Requested AM/PM
Registration deadline January 9, 2025.
I register each student online at competition website.
Guidelines:Due to the number of exams being given, we ask that your students save the whole day and understand that we cannot honor time requests.
Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled test time. At the appointed time, proceed directly to your assigned classroom. Bring 2 sharpened pencils. We ask that parents and guardians wait at the front part of the building and not pass beyond the welcome desk. This allows for much calmer and quieter test- taking conditions for the students. The tests are not timed, but generally take around an hour except for the earliest levels which take less time. We are pleased you chose to participate in the NVMTA/VMTA Theory Mastery Day.
Teachers are required to work 1 hour plus one hour for every four students entered. No partial hours. These assignments are based on the number of students enrolled, regardless of subsequent student withdrawals.
TESTING DETAILS:
1. Students will be assigned times and room numbers by February 1, 2022
2. There will be a teacher/monitor in charge of each examination level.
3. Tests begin on time, and the LISTENING question will be played beginning at 10 minutes after the hour. Students arriving more than 10 minutes late will have missed the listening questions.
4. Exams usually take one hour to complete, but those needing more time are allowed all the time they need to finish.

MUSICAL DICTATION TONAL EAR TRAINING_ CLICK TO GO TO SITE
The Musical Dictation: Tonal Ear Training website is designed for the college music student to practice music dictation independently in the lab or outside class hours, or for anyone else wishing to enhance their musical skills.
This website consists of three categories of dictation—melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic—that are divided into four levels. Each level corresponds to one semester of a pre-university college program in music. Each section is further divided into several chapters that address specific concepts, all presented in a logical progression to promote the solid and continuous development of aural dictation.
In order to use the contents of this site effectively, one must already be familiar with the rudiments of music, including clefs, accidentals, scale degrees, intervals and their qualities, time signatures, and note values.
The Musical Dictation: Tonal Ear Training website is user-friendly and does not require any specialized software. The dictations are in MP3 format and can be downloaded onto a computer or digital music player. The answer keys and a table of contents are also available in PDF format and can be downloaded and printed as needed.
