2025 THEORY AND SIGHT READING EXAMINATION PRE-REQUISITES must be met in order to participate in this event.


ELIGIBILITY 
Student must have passed the examinations for their level on Theory Mastery Day and Skills Day by the application deadline. For example, at the time of application, a student currently in Grade 5 would enroll in level I-B and must have passed sight-reading level 3 and theory level 2B. Students should not enter the Northern District Auditions if they plan to participate in the MTNA Junior High or High School competitions of Virginia.


LEVELS AND TIME LIMITS 
Levels and time limits are determined by the student’s current school grade (and the student must have reached the corresponding sight-reading and theory levels for his or her grade, as shown below).

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS 
Three compositions representing three of the following periods:  Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary.  No changes of repertoire will be allowed after the postmark deadline.

TEACHER GUIDELINES
This is a closed audition. Parents and teachers may wait in the foyer area while students perform.  No video or other recording of any kind is allowed.

Please provide one published score with all measures numbered, and which must not bear the student’s or teacher’s name.
Teachers must agree to abide by the Rules for Competitive Events.
AWARDS
In each level: First Place $40, Alternate $25. Winners and alternates in each level will represent Northern Virginia in the State Auditions at the VMTA Fall Conference. Any Winner or Alternate who chooses to enter the MTNA/Virginia Junior High or High School competitions must withdraw from the State Auditions.


If you are allowed to request a participation time, this will be clearly stated on our website on the event's information page.
A studiowide email will alert you when times for an event are posted.

you do not need to take a judging sheet unless I give it to you, 
Make certain that you check ONE MONTH before any activity to ensure you have original copies of music being performed
Without a Photocopy release form (available only for unpublished music) photocopies are never allowed at events, and results in disqualification. 
Late arrival results in disqualification.  You are not required to attend others' performances in this event--it is an individual audition.
