The Asian American Music Society's International Competition is a unique competition for Elementary, Middle and High School Students and is open to everyone, not only Asians or Americans. There are three divisions based on grade. Participants are encouraged to perform works by Asian composers.

There are three competition divisions:

The Peewee Division is for elementary school students, grades one through five. The Peewee Division is for woodwinds, piano, and string instruments. Participants are required to offer two contrasting pieces from appropriate repertoire totaling no more than five minutes.

The Junior Division is for middle school students, grades six through eight. The Junior Division is for woodwinds, piano, and string instruments. Participants are required to offer two contrasting pieces from appropriate repertoire totaling no more than eight minutes.

The Senior Division is for high school students, grades nine through twelve. The Senior Division is for woodwinds, piano, string instruments, and voice. The Senior Division is the only division with a voice category. Participants are required to offer two contrasting pieces from appropriate repertoire totaling no more than ten minutes.
