The WMTA Bach/Baroque Competition encourages and rewards students for taking up the challenge of learning and performing compositions written by J. S. Bach and other Baroque composers.
This biennial competition is open to piano students through 12th grade and is divided into four levels
- Junior I, Junior II, Intermediate and Senior - a
nd will be held in alternate years.
1st, 2nd, 3rd prize awards and honorable mentions will be awarded in each category.
All competitors will receive certificates and written critiques.
All WMTA rules apply.
ELIGIBILITY, as of competition date:
JUNIOR I: Age 9 and under
INTERMEDIATE: Age 15 and under
JUNIOR II: Age 12 and under
SENIOR: Age 18 and under

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS
TWO (2) MEMORIZED PIECES
Junior Level I (age 9 and under) Time limit: 3 minutes One by J. S. Bach or his sons (required) Ex.: Easier compositions from collections such as the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook, the little Clavier Book of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Short Preludes & Fugues, etc. a 2 nd piece, of comparable difficulty, either by Bach or another Baroque composer
Junior Level II (age 12 and under) Time limit: 5 minutes Any one of the Two-Part Inventions (required) a 2 nd piece, of comparable difficulty, either by Bach or another Baroque composer
Intermediate Level (age 15 and under) Time limit: 8 minutes Any one of the Sinfonias (required) A 2nd piece of comparable difficulty, either by Bach or another Baroque composer Note: A Prelude or a Fugue or a movement from Suites and Partitas counts as a single piece
Senior Level (age 18 and under) Maximum performance time: 20 minutes
A substantial composition or group of compositions by any Baroque composer. Note: A minimum of two (2) movements is required. A Prelude & Fugue must be performed in its entirety; in the case of Bach French Suites, a minimum of three (3) movements are required Examples of suggested repertoire: One (or more) Preludes & Fugues; French Suites (at least three (3) movements);
Fantasias & Fugues; Toccatas; selected movements from the English Suites and Partitas; Italian Concerto; Handel Suites; Scarlatti Sonatas, Couperin Pièces de clavecin, etc.
