sponsored by Maryland State Music Teachers Association Dates: APRIL 21, 2024: FIRST PLACE WINNER- THAI NGUYEN 9th & 10th Grade students APRIL 29, 2024: 11th & 12th Grade students Eligibility: Any piano student in grades 9 through 12, and ages 13 through 18 as of the day of the event. A 10th grade first place winner must wait one year before competing again. No prior first place winners may compete again in the same division. Repertoire: Three memorized compositions. One movement from a piano sonata by Beethoven, Haydn or Mozart is required. The other two pieces must be from two of the following periods: Baroque, Romantic, Impressionistic or Contemporary. Refer to the MTNA composers list to determine the period of the composer. • Music for the judges must have the measures numbered. • Baroque period clarification: A student may play (a) a Prelude or Fugue or (b) both; (c) one or two movements of a suite; (d) one or two Scarlatti/Soler sonatas. Toccatas and Fantasies must be played in their entirety, because they are divided into sections, not movements. • One movement from a sonata or set of pieces constitutes a work, and this specific movement must be listed on the application. • Historical periods for all transcriptions will be determined by the period of the transcriber; all transcriptions must be clearly labeled as such, including the names of BOTH the original composer and transcribing composer. • The prizewinning students may not repeat literature in future competitions. • Contestants will be limited to fifteen (15) minutes of actual performance time. It is acceptable to play for less than 15 minutes. • The general rules governing MSMTA events also apply. Please read them carefully. |
