Information for Students and Parents
Welcome to the 2024 NVMTA Piano Achievement Awards! We wish each student the best of luck...and play great! Here is what you need to know:
VENUES:
Jordan Kitts Music, 8500 Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA, 22031. Please note that parking is available in front of the store in designated spaces, on the service road in front of the store, and behind the building.
United Christian Parish Reston UCP
Steinway Piano Gallery, 1961 Chain Bridge Road, Tysons, VA, 22102 in Tysons Corner Center. Steinway is located on Level 1 of the mall in the wing between Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom. It is probably most convenient to park near one of these stores and enter the mall near them as well.
FOR THE COMPETITION:
Please arrive 15 minutes before your assigned time and report to the check-in monitor, who will be conspicuously placed at each venue. Students arriving late may be able to play for comments only IF time permits. Bring the music you’ll be performing; please make sure that you have numbered the measures if your music is not already published with measure numbers. Numbering at the beginning of each line is fine. You may choose the order in which you would like to play your pieces. Put a short pause in between your pieces; you can proceed from one piece to the next without waiting for judges’ indication to continue, but do make sure to put a pause between each piece. If your program reaches the maximum time allowed for your level, the monitor will stop you. You will not be penalized for going over the time limit for your level. Results will be announced at the conclusion of each group. Play great, and enjoy the competition!
Repertoire Requirements:
No arrangements. All music must be performed from memory.
Levels 1-4. Three pieces representing three of the following five periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, Contemporary.
Level 5. Four works:
1) a piece from the Baroque period*,
2) A sonata movement by Haydn, Clementi, Mozart, Beethoven or early Schubert;
3) a piece from the Romantic or the Impressionistic period, and
4) a contemporary piece.
The style period for a given composer will be defined by the MTNA Composer Classifications. Any composer with two classifications should be classified according to the qualities of the particular work. Additional composers not included on the MTNA Composer Classification List will be classified as follows for NVMTA Achievement Awards from the following list: Composers PAA.
*If playing a work from the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Prelude and Fugue shall be considered one piece, and both must be performed. Eligibility All students are required to participate at their current grade level. Previous first-place winners may not compete again at the same level and must wait until they are eligible for the next level. Either the teacher or student must live in Northern Virginia, or the lessons must be taught in Northern Virginia. Teacher Guidelines No repertoire changes may be made after the registration deadline. Participating teachers are expected to assist the chair as needed based on the number of students enrolled, regardless of subsequent student withdrawals.
