MSMTA GOTTLIEB COMPETITION

Eligibility: Any piano student in the twelfth grade or under.
Last year’s first place winners may not compete this year. Levels: Multiple levels determined by age.
Awards: The following prizes are available at each level: First Place: $50 Second Place: $40 Third Place: $30
Repertoire: Students must perform three works, by three different composers, one from each of the following categories (only composers listed below are acceptable):
1. Any work by J.S. Bach, Couperin, Handel, Purcell, Rameau, D. Scarlatti or Soler. One movement of a suite constitutes a work. A prelude or fugue can constitute a single work,or a prelude and fugue can be scheduled as a single work.
2. A movement from any Sonata/Sonatina, a rondo, a complete theme and variations,or fantasia by Beethoven, Clementi, Diabelli, Haydn, Kuhlau, Lynes, orMozart.
3. Any work, including a movement of a sonata, by Albeniz, Barber, Bartok, Beach,Bernstein, Brahms, Burgmuller, Carter, Chopin, Copland, Corigliano, Cowell, Crumb, Debussy, DelloJoio, de Falla, Diamond, Dutilleux, Faure, Gershwin, Ginastera, Granados, Grieg, Griffes, Ibert, Ives, Kabalevsky, Khatchaturian, Krenek, Lees, Lowell Liebermann, Liszt, MacDowell, Mendelssohn, Menotti, Messiaen, Muczynski, Persichetti, Piston, Poulenc, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Schonberg, Schubert, Robert Schumann, William Schuman, Scriabin, Shchedrin, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Turina, VillaLobos, Carl Vine, George Walker, Weber, or Yardumian. One movement from a work such as Schumann’s Papillons constitutes a singlework.

CHASE SONATA COMPETITION

Awards: The following prizes are available at each level:
First Place: $100
Second Place: $75
Third Place: $50
Repertoire:
Category I: A complete sonata by Mozart from the Theodore Presser Collection (Other editions sonatas are acceptable as long as the sonata itself is included in the Presser Collection)
Category II: A complete sonata by Beethoven (One of the traditional 32 sonatas, excluding Op. 49, No. 2) Note: Depending on the number of participating students, there could be more than one group of competitors for the division (based on age) and composer.
