The all-day bi-annual Bartok Piano Competition is sponsored by the Washington Music Teachers Association.. Repertoire requirements are all pieces by Bartok. One selection from a required list and any piece or pieces of the student's choice up to the time limit for the level entered. There are six levels:
Level 1 (age 8 or under), 4-minute limit: l For Children, Vol I # 26, Moderato OR l For Children, Vol. II #35, Ballad
Level 2 (any age), 4-minute limit: l For Children, Vol. I #32, Andante OR l Nine Little Pieces #8, Tambourine
Level 3 (any age), 5-minute limit: l For Children Vol II #36-37, Rhapsody OR l Bagatelle op. 6 no. 2, Allegro Giocoso
Level 4 (any age), 6-minute limit: l Mikrokosmos Vol. V #133, Syncopation OR l Sketches, Op 9/b no. 7, Poco Lento
Level 5 (any age), 8-minute limit: l Suite op. 14 no. 1, Allegretto OR l Mikrokosmos Vol VI #146, Ostinato
Level 6 (any age), 9-minute limit: l Suite, op. 14 no. 2, Scherzo OR l Bagatelle op. 6 no. 12, Rubato

ALL WMTA RULES APPLY. This competition is held in recital format.Special rules: Each student is assigned to a recital group. Students are encouraged to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to the start of their recital group. Students who arrive late or do not stay for their entire session may play for comments only. lStudents must provide the judges with scores of their pieces. All participants are responsible for complying with U.S. copyright law. For use of copied or downloaded materials, please refer to the WMTA General Rules. lTeachers of participating students should be prepared to help on the day of the competition. If a teacher is unable to help, please refer to the WMTA rules regarding the use of a substitute for one event. The Chairperson must give prior approval for any substitute.
Awards: -1st, 2nd and 3rd places are awarded. Honorable Mentions are given at the discretion of the judges. All students will receive critiques and certificates. -A Gala Winners’ recital will be held at the Embassy of Hungary, date TBD. ALL WMTA RULES APPLY.
